First of all, Sparkling wine is the most fragile of wines and does not accept heat or sunlight well at all. Which i buy my champagne if possible before the heat of summer and then not until well after the weather has cooled down. Of course it is important that your retailer keeps the wine cool, below 60 to 70 degrees certainly, and for longer term storage much cooler, but much wine is ruined in transit. Sparkling wine that has been subjected to too much heat or light may still be OK but taste a bit without life and not remotely as tasty. A current Rose that had been subjected to extreme heat was still drinkable but sampled heavy and syrupy and absolutely not quite right. Sometimes however it may literally taste bad. Try to buy from a store with good turnover as well so the Sparkling wine will not have been sitting around a long time. If buying a lot of Sparkling wine, for example for being married, party, or other joyous occasion, make sure you try the type you are buying first. Different styles will taste extremely different, and everyone has needs and wants. I am an enormous Sparkling wine fan, but there are a few that are very well made but not to my taste for example. Try a few different styles in your price range before buying a lot. You could attempt a bottle a night, or invite friends over and assess all the containers the same night.
